The Comeback Kids
On this day 2 of the UBM trade show that’s Coterie at the Javits Center here in New York City, yours truly today has not only come across big colors on dazzling pieces, but has learned a great deal of history too, like with the story of Glomesh, who’s story began in the 1950’s going all the way up to the 1980’s, where their accessories style left a huge mark on the Australian fashion culture, and it’s being reborn while making its first step on American soil.
To be thorough in detail, Glomesh is a heritage brand out of Australia started by 2 immigrants in 1958, a handbag collection that created a cult following for nearly 3 decades up until the company was dissolved in the 1980’s, now the grandson of the founders has relaunched Glomesh, the style itself is so iconic in Australia that people think the material is called Glomesh, and the next big step is bringing Glomesh to America.
Glomesh are so ingrained into the Australian fashion scene, that their handbags are easily found in vintage stores down under, and lovers of Glomesh pass down their handbags onto their children, nephews, nieces, and grandchildren, it just so happened that one of the people Daniel plus Lauren talked to over at Glomesh had a handbag passed down to her, and she found herself working at Glomesh 3 weeks later.
Daniel, the grandson who’s relaunching Glomesh, where it’s known for its hand-stitched brass on its handbags, is paying homage to its heritage while bringing Glomesh into modern day not only with new handbags, but with new wallets and cellphone cases, it’s wallets have monogram printed onto Glomesh material, and cellphone cases have labels printed on that accessory as well.
As Glomesh makes a comeback onto the fashion scene as a whole, the idea here is incorporating Glomesh’s disco-luxury it’s known for into today’s street-luxury, talking with many buyers, getting lots of feedback on the collection, and making sure it’s placed in the right stores now where corrections don’t have to be made 5 years down the line.
As Daniel plus Lauren sat and observed this collection, it’s sure to have a new renaissance not only in Australia, but here in the United States and other countries as well.
