Regards Now More Than Ever
The New York Times Events had its first livestream of performances and conversation tonight titled “Offstage: Opening Night”, a new weekly series that opens up the wounds encountered by COVID19, as well as George Floyd, all combine to dig deep about contributions made, as well as critics favorite moments performed from broadway.
The top of the show got candid with Wesley Morris holding talks with Kenny Leon, Celia Rose Gooding, Adrienne Warren, and Daniel J. Watts who not only declare that they’re better people from COVID19, but are reminded they’re eyes must be open of any injustice they may feel on stage or offstage, forcing themselves to love Broadway not only for themselves, but to convey a powerful message to the world, and take themselves off Broadway to be better to others.
Critics of the New York Times gave all their love with performances from the casts of these now-closed Broadway shows, a gender-bent revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “Company”; shows set to the songbooks of Bob Dylan and Alanis Morissette; “Moulin Rouge! The Musical”; and the girl-power extravaganza “Six,” which was 90 minutes from opening before Broadway closed down.
Dramatically, there was “Slave Play,” perhaps the season’s most provocative production; and “The Sound Inside,” an intense character study that gave Mary-Louise Parker one of her finest roles, all forced to pivot from stage to Zoom that still belted out the best acting and tune there could be.
The most painful thing about this COVID19 lockdown was not seeing, feeling, or touching people in real time, “Moulin Route” choreographer, Sonya Tayeh, felt that especially when talking about the COVID19 shutdown, she misses the chance to dabble with choreography felt from the movie, “Moulin Rouge”, so cast members performed their best dance numbers to fill that creative void.
Though, Daniel plus Lauren is not a critic on the whole, a writer of fashion and Lauren Conrad mainly, but in sync with the New York Times, if the “Tony Awards” were to happen now, which they’re not, these plays performed on “Offstage” tonight would each take a Tony home.
