SIPS OF CARE
DANIEL PLUS LAUREN spent the dawn of the evening tonight here at NeueHouse off of Park Avenue to encounter Avignonesi. This is a noble wine company who believes in becoming good ancestors by nourishing the land and people. As Avignonesi creates a better world for future generations, a good wine industry is built on organic agriculture, sustainable distribution systems, and consumer education. DPL took up the chance to sample 3 of Avignonesi’s vintage and current wines that honor wine at its finest.
DPL dug into the past by sampling Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano D.O.C.G. 2014, made with Sangiovese grapes that highlight traces of habitat. Smoothness is the first thing you feel in the first sip, it tastes fresh, stays with your palate, and red berries with floral hints land a balsamic touch. The hints of a good wine company play out tremendously for its medium bodied flavor, velvety tannins keep a pleasant aftertaste going for very long. A vintage wine at best for D.O.C.G., but its aging process stay productive to keep this wine sustainably fresh.
Leap frog to last year with Da.Di Bianco 2023 (Toscana I.G.T. Bianco), a celebration of innovation for exceptional white wine from almost lost grapes. A very new classic at best, but its experimentation and innovation create a harmonious with that’s distinct with fresh personality. The word indigenous has been classified as a stain on our nation’s fabric, but research and understanding causes us to take a closer look. Not indigenous people, but indigenous grapes at risk of extinction celebrate new life to gift us with a new exceptional taste.
Somewhere in the past, but very much in the present, you have Avignonesi’s 2019 and 2020 editions of wines in their own variations. 50 & 50 2019 are based on friends comparing their wines, 50 percent Sangiovese from Campanelle and 50 percent Merlot from Avignonesi. Desiderio 2020 Toscana I.G.T. Merlot is a 100 year old Tuscany bull, celebrating Avignonesi’s longevity, and the Bistecca Fiorentina. And we return to Vino Nobile di Montepulciano in 2020 where the winter was mild, heavy rains created difficult conditions, but retained moisture held in a hot summer celebrates pomegranate, violet, tomato leaf, ripe cherries, and plum jam for a balanced dynamic body and lasting finish.
You can see and feel the care put into Avignonesi, maintaining its sterling status as a more than respectable wine company while freshly vintage and innovative. Each wine has a story, but grapes are the star since they’ve had to work overtime to produce their own flavor, thanks to weather conditions. Almost like humans, grapes had to endure their fight for respect, and not be ignored because of an adverse past. The main idea for a good wine company is to create an industry where it cares for its people, and its community, which tastes of Avignonesi strives to do.
