Back in the 70s, fashion was much simpler.
If you wanted to dress well, the men would find a nice suit and a matching handkerchief, and the ladies would put on a nice dress with a hat.
Drop those people in 2024, and they’d think we lost our minds.
But maybe that’s exactly what happened.
We slowly stopped caring about traditional norms, and started pushing the boundaries.
Nowadays, anything can be fashion.
It’s about how you wear it.
That’s the essence of fashion at its purest form; it’s not about what you wear, it’s about how you wear it.
And it’s the same reason why the generations before don’t understand today’s trends.
In losing our minds, we learned to not care about what others think; if you put on an outfit and you think you look good, it looks good.
And nobody can tell you different.
The fashion space has diversified globally so now we’ve created a melting pot of ideas.
People in Japan will get something trending, and it becomes fashion over there, then Americans will steal the idea and take it a step further.
Then someone somewhere in Europe will take that idea and add some old traditional concepts to it, and the cycle keeps going, like evolution.
Today, fashion is no longer just clothes, it’s self expression.
You can express anything, any way you want; or you can wear something just to be different, or simply because you think it looks good.
And nobody can tell you any different.
Your clothes can say something about you, how you feel, or what era you’re currently in.
Or it can say nothing at all, you may wear something that represents the opposite of how you feel; and nobody will ever know the true reason why you chose that outfit.
That’s the beauty of it, it’s the one space where anything goes.
If you say it’s an outfit, who can tell you it’s not.
New ideas are formed everyday based on certain ideas from one environment, and then someone in a totally different environment may wear the same thing and give it a whole new meaning.
The best part of picking out clothes is that you can be one thing on Monday, and something completely different on Tuesday.
And you’re the same you.
Or maybe you’re a different version of you that day, nobody knows.
So express yourself !
Wear what you want.
If it’s not cool today it probably will be in a few years.
If it’s out of style, best believe it will come back.
That’s the essence of humans as a whole.
Trends come and go, and come back again, just like history.
It always repeats itself.
So next time you don’t like someone’s outfit, just know, you may be looking at the newest trend… or one that will be back.
Fashion is a freedom to make your own art, and your body is the canvas.
You can paint it any way you like.
And just like abstract art in the days of Picasso, people may not understand you right away.
But maybe that’s the point.
It’s all open to interpretation.
