WOMANHOOD IN ART

New York City has been a melting pot of works to tap into a co-op of ideas about art, and what art is, it’s come from many perspectives both man and woman. Though, it has never been considered how art could be created if you put gender on the forefront, seeing what you come up with. DANIEL PLUS LAUREN on Wednesday evening ventured over to NeueHouse where Art creator and author, Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy, talked about her new book, “New Woman’s Work”. Angelik talked live with featured artists Melissa Joseph and Roxanne Jackson about delivering artwork that came from a woman’s perspective.

Angelik interviewed 38 female artists who were not afraid to detail their ideas and breakthroughs, types of solids, canvases, and paints used, plus not afraid of their choices. Fine works can also be found through cross-stitching, decorative ceramics, and quilts that span from centuries to the present. Such works by extraordinary women were created to speak out about the feelings and the struggles that women feel not only as artists, but as woman. Angelik also mentioned a fascinating fact that the decision to make sloppy art is a very conscious choice, and nobody will judge you for it.

“New Woman’s Work” encourages all women artists out there to explore all levels of the female, whether it’s through mind, heritage, or sexuality. There is certainly no limitation as to what these women can do to explore materials that put forth the feminine art according to each artist. Freedom is certainly a huge factor if you want to take up the challenge of doing artwork where a woman is doing all the talking. Time and money should not dictate, persuade, influence, or hold back your creativity, Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy’s message in “New Women’s Work” is to just go and do it. Do not hold, or do not let anything hold you back.
