The documentary “Andy Warhol and Jamie”, produced and directed by Bonnie Bien and LA PRESSE Films, premiered at the Big Apple Film Festival at the Village East Angelika Theater on the Lower East Side of New York City on May 13. It shows how Andy Warhol’s roots inspired his nephew, Jamie, to forge his own artistic path. James is widely recognized for his science fiction book covers. He has illustrated more than 30 children’s books and created vivid, colorful imagery for MAD magazine and Topps’ Garbage Pail Kid cards.
Andy Warhol’s artistic vision was shaped by the grit and values of his Pittsburgh roots. His family instilled in him a strong work ethic, which helped drive his success and influenced his nephew, Jamie Warhola, to pursue his own creative path. The film emphasizes one of the biggest lessons Andy passed on to his nephew, James, it was to think boldly and create on a grand scale. That ambitious mindset shaped Andy’s success.

The film offers an intimate look at Andy Warhol’s family life and the hardships he overcame on his way to becoming one of the most famous artists in the world. It also reveals James as a successful artist in his own right, while examining the insecurities that can come from following in the footsteps of an idol, and ultimately where those insecurities can lead.
James Warhola following the path of his uncle Andy continues, to influence the next generation, including his daughter, who is also an artist. James carries forward the family’s artistic legacy that Andy’s pop art shaped in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s in New York’s art scene, that legacy is sustained by optimism and a belief in art’s power to shape the future.
For Bonnie Bien, who made this film, it was a very enlightening experience. It took Bonnie to many fun places and working with James was a great experience. The best part was that Jamie gave Bonnie access to his life.
