Preventing Starvation
Theater actors in the United Kingdom have been given a lifeline as Variety reports today that West End performers struck a new deal for their contracts to continue as if they were performing, even though the West End has been shutdown thanks to COVID19.
The contracts facilitated by the U.K. actors union, Equity, and the Society of London Theatre, allows rehearsals and performances to resume once the shutdown ends, covering all types of West End stage productions, no matter how limited or long the run is, and the new contract also covers the West End shutdown for the entire duration, however long that may be.
For the moments, most U.K. West End theaters are closed until May 31, and could possibly extend their shutdown, and Broadway here in the U.S. extended their shutdown to June 7, which may extend as well.
