NEW YORK (April 8, 2026)

In a rare, insider-only moment, New York’s fashion community gathered on Monday, April 6, 2026, in SoHo for an evening that felt less like an event and more like a living archive of the industry itself: an intimate celebration of the legendary journalist Marylou Luther.

Hosted by Fashion Group International (FGI) and Norma Kamali at Kamali’s studio, the room was filled with designers and tastemakers whose careers have, in many ways, been shaped by Luther’s discerning eye and early advocacy.

Kamali set the tone with a personal reflection on Luther’s support during pivotal, career-defining moments, highlighting a relationship that evolved from journalist and subject into enduring friendship.

The guest list read like a cross-generational snapshot of New York fashion: Stan Herman, Ralph Rucci, Yeohlee Teng, Christian Francis Roth, Ken Downing, Jeffrey Banks, Freddie Leiba, Peter Som, Ruben Toledo, Cyril Verdavainne, Frederick Anderson, Gary Wassner, Nolan Meader, and Fern Mallis, among others, each with their own story of Luther’s impact.

A standout moment of the evening unfolded as Kamali prompted Luther to revisit her interviews with some of fashion’s most iconic figures, including Yves Saint Laurent, Sonia Rykiel, Halston, Oscar de la Renta, and Calvin Klein: names that anchored decades of fashion history and sparked a series of vivid recollections.

The conversation culminated with an unforgettable anecdote about Coco Chanel. Luther recalled asking Chanel why she never descended the staircase to take a bow after her shows in Paris. Chanel’s answer was as precise as her designs: she preferred to remain at the top of the stairs, observing guests as they exited, capturing their unfiltered reactions in real time, and understanding exactly what they truly thought.

More than a tribute, the evening became a portrait of influence of a journalist whose instinct for talent, timing, and truth has quietly shaped the trajectory of modern fashion.

Many of the luminaries present at this fashion event will convene again in Manhattan next week for another historic occasion, as FGI celebrates the 30th anniversary of the FGI Rising Star Awards on April 16, 2026, marking 30 years of spotlighting emerging talent and industry excellence.
